If we’re going to do a review of a Krug champagne then we absolutely have to start with the magnificent Krug Grande Cuvee.

Henri Krug himself said: ‘Krug Grand Cuvée is as a symphony, a composition where all the instruments play together, complimenting each other in total harmony’ – so it does have rather a lot to live up to!

Widely acclaimed by champagne connoisseurs around the World as one of the finest champagnes available, the question is does Grande Cuvee live up to expectations, and is it worth the price (since it is more expensive than many other standard champagnes).

First of all lets start by examining the champagne itself.

Krug do not produce mass market champagnes, their ethos is to produce only the purest champagnes, consequently in smaller volumes than other producers, and it is this dedication to preserving high quality over high quantities that maintains Krugs reputation as one of, if not the, leading champagne house.

Krug Grande Cuvee doesn’t have a recipe as such, every year the krug family meet to recreate their Grande Cuvee champagne, with special emphasis being placed on making sure that when it is ready 6 years later, it has consistency with the Grande Cuvees from previous years.

Krug Grande Cuvee is blended from between 40 and 50 wines produced from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes from up to 25 growths, and from between 6 to 10 years to ensure a wonderful combination of rich and complex flavours.

Now to the important bit – the champagne itself!

This champagne has a distinctive, mouth watering creamy bouquet, with subtle nutty, toasty undertones, and has a full, rich, and deep taste that is characteristically dry leaving you wishing for more.

Krug Grande Cuvee is a powerful and superior champagne, it could be described as the luxury sports car of champagnes, it beats the mass produced champagne of other producers by a significantly large margin.

So back to the 2 main questions that we asked at the beginning:

Does Krug Grande Cuvee live up to expectations? Resoundingly and without question, yes!

Is Krug Grande Cuvee worth the price? Although it is more expensive than other champagnes, the extra cost is nowhere near as large as the extra quality that you get with Krugs Grand Cuvee, so for us, yes, it is well worth the price tag.

*Note: Krug Grande Cuvee is available in a special silk lined wooden gift box for special occassions and gifts, or you can buy the bottle without the packaging at a lower price.
