The History of Moet Champagne
Moet et Chandon is one of the world’s largest champagne producers as well as being a distinguished champagne house. Moët et Chandon holds a Royal Warrant to supply champagne to Queen Elizabeth II.
Claude Moët began the champagne house in 1743 under the name of Moët et Cie and immediately began shipping wine from Champagne to Paris. During the reign of King Louis XV, the demand for sparkling wine or champagne increased. Shortly after establishing, the champagne house had among their clientele nobles and aristocrats.
In 1750, Moet started doing business with Madame de Pompadour. She supplied the Royal Court at Compiègne with Moët’s champagne. At the same time, Claude Moet established businesses in colonial America, Germany, Spain, and Eastern Europe.
Claude Moet passed away in 1792 and his grandson Jean-Rémy Moët took control of the champagne house. At this time, he expanded the business by purchasing the vineyards of the Abbey of Hautvillers.
In the 19th century, Moet champagne was still a royal drink.
Moet was a famous name all due to the delightful champagnes that were created. Moet rubbed elbows with many rich and famous of the time and even dedicated the Moet et Chandon Brut Imperial to Napoleon.
Once this connection was made, Moet soon had many other influential clientele including Tsar Alexander II of Russia, Emperor Francis II of Austria, the Duke of Wellington, Madame de Staël, Queen Victoria, and the Prince Royal of Russia.
During the 1820’s it is believed that on average 20,000 bottles of Moet champagne was sold every year. In 1832, Jean-Remy Moet retired and his son Victor Moet along with son in law Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles was placed in charge. At this time, the name was changed to Moët et Chandon.
In 1842, Moët et Chandon introduced their first vintage champagne. The best selling brut was introduced in the 1860’s, which was Brut Imperial.
World War I was hard on Moët et Chandon as it was with most champagne houses in France. The offices and guests houses were destroyed. However, after the war, Moët et Chandon introduced their Dom Pérignon brand of vintage champagne in the late 1920’s.
By the 1950’s Moët et Chandon, Count Robert-Jean de Vogüé became the leader of the champagne house. No longer a family owned business but a corporation; by 1962 Moet et Chandon became the first champagne house to be listed on the French stock market.
