The History of Laurent Perrier Champagne

In 1812, Alphonse Pierlot from Chigny-les-Roses moved to tours-sur-Marne on the land named Plaisances and La Tour Glorieux and starts producing the first champagnes on the house.

Alphonse Pierlot places Eugene Laurent as his cellar master in 1881 and along with his wife Mathilde Emilie Perrier run the champagne house.

On November 12, 1887, an article appeared in the Illustrated London News about Laurent-Perrier Champagne regarding the champagne had no sugar added. Eugene Laurent passes away in 1887, at which time his wife Mathilde takes control of the estate and linked her surname with the house to create the brand Veuve Laurent-Perrier & Cie.

By 1914, under the control of Mathilde the house produces a record-breaking 50,000 cases of Champagne.

During World War II like all champagne houses weakened. During this time, Mathilde hired Alexander Fletcher Keith Machenzie to expand and introduce their brand to Great Britain.

Mathilde passes away in 1925 and Eugenie inherits the champagne. The house is still struggling due to WWI and Eugenie decides to sell the champagne house. She sells Laurent-Perrier to Madame Louise Lanson de Nonancourt, sister to Champagne producers Victor and Henri Lanson.

The next few years, Marie Louise Landon de Nonancourt fought to keep the champagne house alive during World War II and even hid 100,000 bottles of champagne behind the wall while her sons, Maurice and Bernard, were fighting in WWII.

Maurice was to be the heir of the house; however, he was taken prisoner and killed in the concentration camp of Oranienbourg. WWII ends in 1945 and Bernard de Nonancourt breaks into Hitler’s cave with his tank regime, close by the Eagle’s Nest where half a million bottles of wine including several hundred cases of Salon Champagne, were discovered.

Bernard starts out as an apprentice in the houses of Lanson and Delamotte and learns all there was to know about the creation of champagne. In 1949, Bernard takes over ownership of Laurent-Perrier.

Throughout history, Laurent Perrier Champagne House has seen success and innovative inventions and methods of creating their famous champagne.

In 1950, Laurent Perrier Champagne House was the first to use stainless steel tanks; in 1958 Laurent-Perrier introduced the first multi-vintage prestige cuvee, the Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle; and in 1968 Laurent-Perrier introduced the first ever Cuvée Rosé Brut made from 100% Pinot Noir.
