The History of Mumm Champagne

The House of G.H. Mumm throughout history has a strong lineage that includes knights and barons and can be traced back to the 12 century. The champagne producing family can be traced back to 1761, when Peter Arnold Mumm began a wine production and distribution business in Cologne.

By the beginning of the 19th century, Peter Mumm’s sons, Jacobus, Gottlieb and Phillip, established a champagne house in Rheims. The House of G.H. Mumm was officially established in 1827. The family created champagne a bit different from other houses of the era in that they purchased grapes directly from the growers instead of purchasing must or grape juice.

This gave G.H. Mumm, control over the quality of grapes that he used in creating his wines and champagnes. Today, the House of G.H. Mumm ranks as the third largest champagne producer in the world and sells close to eight million bottles every year.
